Four children’s books are scheduled to be the main components in the Meet the Vowels series of the Phonics Please program. Each will come with a section for parents and teachers, offering detailed instructions and supplemental activities to reinforce learning, so there will be no need for a separate teaching manual. Every book will be all-in-one: a children’s book followed by a teacher guide, practice pages, and supplemental activities.

The colorful cartoon characters and catchy verses found in these four books will transform vowel learning from tedious worksheet exercises into the fun of discovery found inside the covers of a book. What better way is there to instill a love of books than to start the learning-to-read process with colorful children’s books that teach the ABCs and their sounds?

Linda Lampi is a retired teacher from the San Bernardino City Unified School District. She earned her BA, teaching credential, and MA from California State University, San Bernardino. Throughout her thirty-nine years as an educator and into retirement, Linda Lampi specialized in teaching reading to all types of students, from remedial learners to high achievers.

Mrs. Lampi held many roles. Besides being a teacher in elementary and middle schools, she also served as a resource teacher, a reading support teacher, and a bilingual facilitator. During her teaching career, Mrs. Lampi received the Arrowhead Reading Award three times from California State University, San Bernardino.

It all began with a simple drawing. When a group of first graders arrived in her classroom not knowing their letters, Linda Lampi drew a W on the board and gave it a pair of shoes. “Look,” she said, “it is Walking W.” The concept of Consonant Creatures was born.

A simple drawing became a book, which developed into Phonics Please, Mrs. Lampi’s own phonics program. She has already brought Consonant Creatures to life and dressed all the letters in costumes in her specialty book, ABCs for Halloween. Phonics Please will grow to include two full collections, Meet the Consonants and Meet the Vowels, making every letter of the alphabet memorable through clever characters and catchy poems.

Mrs. Lampi has used materials from Phonics Please in many classrooms from kindergarten to second grade with outstanding results. Additionally, letter characters from her innovative program have been successfully introduced to preschool children as young as two years old, giving them a head start before they ever step foot in a classroom.

Linda Lampi believes that learning to read should be an adventure, not a chore. Phonics Please is growing from one letter to a book to a program, giving children a strong start on their reading journey, one letter at a time.
